Major Accomplishments

Since its founding as a group of concerned property owners in 1984, SPONY has become a prominent organization representing the unique interests of small property owners in New York.

  • SPONY members have spoken at every RGB hearing, and we personally lobby each public member before the final vote.
  • SPONY has filed amicus curiae (friend-of-the-court) briefs in numerous court cases dealing with housing matters before New York State Supreme Court.
  • SPONY testifies regularly at City Hall hearings related to legislation affecting rental properties
  • SPONY participates in meetings related to Section 8 housing issues.
  • SPONY represents the small owner’s voice with all elected NYS Assemblymen and Senators. SPONY actively lobbies for legislative changes in Albany to remove the excessive regulations that cripple the small owner’s right to own and operate rental housing in NYC.

SPONY’s tireless efforts have led to a change of rhetoric in public policy discussions about housing in City Hall and elsewhere. The particular challenges facing smaller owners are now at least being acknowledged by City and State government.

Beyond these accomplishments, our most important achievements occur at every membership meeting. Owners share and receive information that directly affects their business and solves some of their most vexing problems.
